As a rule in medieval warfare...
Siege engines are useless against an concentrated assault of infantry or calvary. Sure you can hurl a ballista bolt or catipult stone at an on rushing hoarde- but it tkes a while to load those things and aim them. that way they were mostly used again cities. Archers or crossbowmen were much more effective against assaulting troops for that reason.
